BEST RESTAURANTS AND BARS OPENING IN AUGUST 2024

Virgin Hotel London

Richard Branson’s first hotel in London, a 120-room luxury lifestyle hotel with a rooftop bar, a pool, restaurant, private members’ club, gym and treatment rooms. This will be a re-branding of the current Mondrian hotel. Marlin's will be running the rooftop, members’ club, gym & spa, with Mediterranean dishes, rooftop pool and live music. Spanish restaurant BiBo Shoreditch by chef Dani Garcia, serving Andalusian tapas and cocktails, will remain and Commons Club will offer artisan coffee and pastries.

This opening also marks the 10th anniversary of Virgin Hotels.

Hot Dogs by Three Darlings Harrods

Opening Date: 1 August 2024

Restaurateur Jason Atherton (multiple Michelin stars winner)and wife Irha are relocating to the Dining Hall of Harrods and opening a 25-seat gourmet all-counter hot dog dining space, taking his three children’s heritage as inspiration (hence the name).

They will have five gourmet hot dogs to choose from and a rotating celebrity-endorsed dog (with proceeds donated to the A-lister’s charity of choice), as well as Koffmann potato fries and sundaes. As for drinks, they will have milkshakes, martinis, champagne, wine and beer.

Atherton is very busy this year as he is opening four more restaurants: Mary's later this month, Sael in September, Three Darlings in October and Row on 5 in November. The 53-year-old chef owner The Social Company restaurant group and has opened nearly 40 restaurant in the last 20 years.

 

VU from The Tower

Mistletoe Mixer

A pop-up Christmas bar in the summer, by DesignMyNight at Merchant House.  A kitsch and festive two-week pop-up hidden behind a secret toilet door, with retro décor, eggnog cocktails, and non-stop Christmas hits.

 

Rudy's Napoletana Pizza Westfield

Rudy’s began from pizza parties hosted by Jim and Kate in Manchester, from their love of dough, pizza and their puppy Rudy, quickly becoming the North’s favourite pizzeria.

Rudy's is a relaxed pizzeria for dine in, delivery and takeaway which has seen a fast expansion lately and are always doing a very generous giveaway with every opening.

 

Marceline

A grand French brasserie, with a terrace called Salon Marceline. Robert Aikens (Tom Aikens' twin and ex Roux Brothers and Pastis in Mew York) ) will look after the menu.

 

Dirty Bagels

Eat Momo

Sisters Trishna and Dipa Chamling are focusing on Nepalese steamed dumplings, inspired by regional recipes across Nepal and playing traditional folk songs. They are taking over one of the railway arches for a "canteen-style eatery", with both a riverside terrace and a hatch for momo-to-go.

 

Kricket Canary Wharf

Glamarama Green

Daisy Green's new venture, on the former Brown and Rosie site, inspired by Victoria & Albert Museum. The Green Room downstairs is inspired by William Morris and will include over 25 art pieces from Rose Blake of fashion icons and Collagism.

 

KERB Holborn

A new lunch market every Wednesday by Kerb in Holborn, with great traders, such as:

The people behind Angus Steakhous are opening their second Alley Cats restaurant, on the former Humble Pizza space, after the success of the Marylebone site which opened last year. Expect huge 14-inch NYC-style pizzas and a few occasional collaborations.

 

JENKI Covent Garden

Rusty Rabbit

Gasoline Grill at The Standard

Popular burger restaurants in Copenhagen will be popping up at Double Standard. It was named after originally being open in a petrol station and has received many burger awards.

Lolo

José Pizarro is opening his fifth restaurant in London. Called Lolo, a tongue in cheek reference to José’s middle name, Manuel, it marks his first all-day dining gem and his third restaurant in Bermondsey.

José has been busy recently as he is celebrating his 25th Anniversary in London as well as receiving a big honour, the Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, from King Felipe of Spain.

 

EL&N Westfield

The Marquee Moon

A new restaurant, cocktail and hi-fi bar as 'The Marquis of Lansdowne' in Dalston is being relaunched as 'The Marquee Moon' by the team behind Docklands nightclub The Cause and All My Friends in Hackney Wick and The Greyhound in Peckham. The pub will serve "an eclectic sharing menu based on a twist of contemporary pub classics with an emphasis on East Asian flavours" by Executive Chef, New Zealand native, Huri Rapana Neil.

 

Mary's

Jason Atherton's Pollen Street Social fine dining restaurant has closed on 31 July 2024 and will reopen as a grill restaurant and burger bar, led by Alex Parker (ex Executive Chef at Social Eating House), named after a Pollen Street Social regular called Mary.

It will have three main parts: the bar will turn into Blind Pig bar (currently the Social Eating House), the 10-seater chef's counter will become 'Burgers Only' - a smash burger bar, and the main restaurant will now be serving a grilled meats and fish menu.

Furthermore, the site will close from January to April 2024 for a complete makeover, when the burger bar will become "Meat and Two Veg", moving downstairs in a speakeasy-style space and adding a plant burger to the menu.

Atherton is also opening three more restaurants: Sael in September, Three Darlings in October and Row on 5 in November after opening a Three Darlings hot dog counter earlier this month.

 

You Call the Shots

Chatsworth Bakehouse is opening a second bakery near the original shop, for a walk-in option. Originally born during lockdown, they are best known for their focaccia sandwiches that change daily.

 

It's Bagels

Popular NYC-style bagel joint is expanding with a second site, by photographer Dan Martensen, on the former Rika Moon space.

 

Kato Kitchen Clapham Pop-UP

After the hugely successful run of Magic Momo London which wraps up on 17th August, King & Co welcomes a brand-new culinary experience: Kato Kitchen will be taking over the kitchen. Kato was founded by four friends with a shared passion for East Asian cuisine and is all about delivering powerful and unique flavours, focusing on bao buns.

 

Ambassadors Clubhouse

Punjabi restaurant named after the founders’ maternal grandfather, a former Indian ambassador, it will be JKS's fourth Indian restaurant. The space has 140 seats, split across two floors, with a big outdoor heated terrace and three private dining rooms. The design will include Indian patterns, bright prints, a "maximalist central bar with a gold dome", booth seating and counter dining inside.

JKS group already has three Indian restaurants in their portfolio – Trishna, Gymkhana and Brigadiers.

 

KöD

Get Baked pop-up at Fortnum's

Lenny's Apizza

New Haven-style pizzeria popping-up at The Bedford Tavern for a long-term residency by Max Lewis. This type of pizza is originally from Frank Pepe Pizzeria in New Haven Connecticut, and the pizzas are left in the oven longer to develop a special crust.

 

Sunday in Brooklyn

The popular New York restaurant, famous for its pancakes, is opening a second location after Notting Hill.

 

Lussmanns Highgate

Owner and MD Andrei Lussmann, launched his first Lussmanns in North Kensington in 2002 which later closed. He already has five restaurants in Hertfordshire but he is now returning to London after over 20 years, on the former Côte Brasserie space, due to be his sixth restaurant.

The restaurant will have a cafe-style front, where it will sell sandwiches, salads and drinks to take away, and a main space, with 130 seats along with a walled garden with 30 seats within. It will also have a bar serving Lussmann's own Garden Gin and Mad Squirrel brewery beers.

The menu will change eight times per year and focuses on the best British produce, ethical dining, high-welfare farming and sustainable seafood, with brunch on weekends and set menus.

 

Oh Gee Pop-Up at the Hoxton Shoreditch

South Korean chef Byung Tae Ahn is bringing his award-winning Korean fried chicken Oh Gee to London at the Hoxton Grill for a three months residency. The chef has won Grand Champion at the K-Chicken War, a cooking competition focusing on Korean fried chicken and has recently opened a robotic fried chicken restaurant in New Jersey called 101 Chicken. The Hoxton pop-up will showcase 101’s menu.

Award-winning bar is opening permanent site, after running as a pop-up Prelude for a few months, now as a restaurant as well, located in the basement, similar to the original bar in Smithfield. The menu is designed by chef director Gustavo Giallionardo and it mixes traditional Latin American dishes and flavours with European cooking, and Samet Ali asbar director. They will also have bar snacks upstairs at the Bamboo Bar, live jazz in the basement, and lots of woven bamboo alongside cherry red and timber banquettes.

 

Meatopia

Live-fire cooking festival, founded by Josh Ozersky and one of London's most popular food festivals, is back for its 11th edition, with a big focus on sustainability. The line-up is always spectacular, with chefs such as:

  • Melt - A Texas BBQ specialist that comes via Paris
  • Ben Tish - the Cubitt House director and chef is bringing a taste of Sicily
  • Adriana Cavita - Returning to the festival and mixing live-fire cooking and her Mexican dishes
  • Sam York - The Michelin-starred chef of Heron in Edinburgh
  • Ana Ortiz - A live-fire expert and regular at the festival, known for her banquets in Wiltshire
  • Joe Couldridge - Head Chef at The Prince Arthur pub in Hackney (with time at Hawksmoor, Crocadon and Leroy too)
  • Karla Zazueta - A Mexican cookery teacher, whose north Mexican cookbook, Norteña has just been released.

 

 

Smashd & Buttered

A a burger spot with a straightforward menu of cheeseburgers, fried chicken burgers, and bacon cheeseburgers. On weekends there’ll also be skirt steak and whole baby chicken with chips.

 

Trickle

Address: East Croydon

New bar & terrace located at East Croydon by Bart & Taylor, a collection of award-winning, boutique venues.

 

Cornerhouse

Address: ground floor of Market on Rye Lane

Opening Date: Summer 2024

A café, bar, food hall and event space, by the Handson Family (the people behind popular workspace, Market, in Peckham), offering brunch and lunch. Traders include The PorchNativoGreek KitchenYoung Nola and Taco Taco. The name comes from Lyon’s Tea Rooms and Corner Houses, which first occupied the building at 133a Rye Lane over a century ago.

The space will also host events such a daytime creole Seafood Boil in the courtyard with Young Nola on August 11, a supper club with Nativo on August 13, a Latin brunch on August 25, a Carnival warm-up party featuring Mister S, and weekly sets from resident DJs like Handson Family and Talia A Darling.
